Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin convenes parliamentarians to get the fence project approved at the legislative level.
The Finnish Ministry of the Interior has offered 6 million euros to build a fence on the border with the Russian Federation. Finnish newspaper Ilta-Sanomat writes about it
It is reported that a short section of the fence is to be built in South-East Finland, and the project includes not only the fence, but also the road running along it and technical supervision. If the project is approved, it will be launched in the near future, in 2022.
Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said that there are grounds for creating a partial fencing of the state border between Finland and Russia. She also said that she was going to convene the leadership of parliamentary groups and parties as soon as possible so that the project would receive broad support.
The newspaper writes that the discussion on the construction of a fence on the border with the Russian Federation began in Finland immediately after the start of a full-scale war in Ukraine. Now the fence is supposed to be built not along the entire length of the eastern border of Finland, but in the most dangerous areas, such as border crossings and their surroundings. The main part of the fence will be in the border control concentration zone in South-East Finland.
According to the plan of the Finnish Border Guard, the fence will be 130-260 kilometers long. The construction of the entire fence is a multi-year project with a total cost of hundreds of millions of euros.
