The road to the awakened volcano in the national park was closed. As a precautionary measure, two shelters were opened for the population of the island.
On Monday, November 28, Mauna Loa, the largest active volcano in the world, began erupting in Hawaii in the United States. The last time he “woke up” was in 1984. It is reported by CNN.
According to the Hawaii Tourism Authority, the eruption in the Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park does not threaten residents of nearby settlements. Also, this does not yet affect air traffic with the island of Hawaii.
However, the road to the volcano in the national park was immediately closed. As a precaution, two human shelters were also opened.
At the same time, according to the Honolulu National Weather Service, in some parts of the island can accumulate a trail of less than a quarter of an inch (0.635 cm) of ash, as the wind carries fine ash and volcanic gas to other locations.
Volcano Observation Center said that about half of the eruptions of the Mauna Loa volcano never go beyond the top.
“We continue to monitor the situation and share information with emergency personnel as the situation develops, as well as publish updates as necessary,” the center commented.
Numerous photos and videos of the spectacular eruption of the volcano also appeared on the network.
Mauna Loa is the largest active volcano
Mauna Loa Volcano is one of the five that make up the Big Island of Hawaii. It is not only the largest in the group, but also the largest active volcano in the world.
The volcanic giant rises almost 4,000 meters above sea level. If we take into account the array that is hidden under the surface of the Pacific Ocean, then the height of Mauna Loa as a whole is more than 16.5 thousand meters.
The last time it erupted in 1984. Scientists managed to warn the authorities and the population about the threat a few weeks before the eruption.
