The adversity and the stakes will rise several notches for the French handball team in the main round of the Handball World Championship, which it will begin on Tuesday in Varazdin (Croatia) against Hungary in a strong position, the only team in its group with the maximum points.

The Netherlands' defeat on Sunday against Hungary (36-32) at the end of Group D is indeed good for Les Bleus: they are alone at the top of Group II (4 pts), one length ahead of the Hungarians and two ahead of the Dutch and the Austrians. North Macedonia, who took the last ticket in Group D by dominating Guinea (29-20), only has one point. Qatar brings up the rear without a point.

The opposition will move up a notch

A win this Tuesday at 9 p.m. against the Magyars and they would therefore open the door wide to the quarter-finals (which the first two will see) before facing the Dutch on Thursday and then two days later the Macedonians, trained by national legend Kiril Lazarov.

After a diligent and easy first round (37-19 against Qatar, 43-19 against Kuwait and 35-27 against Austria), the opposition will however go up a notch for the French, without them crossing paths with title contenders.

The Hungarians will also be playing practically at home in Varazdin, a town located about twenty kilometers from the border and where the French arrived early Sunday evening after leaving Porec.

The match between the French team and Hungary will be broadcast on beIN SPORTS 1 and in the clear on TFX at 9 p.m. .
