François Legault compares Éric Duhaime to Donald Trump | Elections Quebec 2022
This rapprochement demonstrates the outgoing PM's lack of respect for his opponents, retorts the leader of the PCQ.
The head of the CAQ, François Legault, compared Éric Duhaime to Donald Trump on Friday morning, wanting to return to the debate the day before and his full-bodied exchange with the conservative leader about the management of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The tone went up a notch again on Friday morning between the leader of the Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ), François Legault, and his counterpart from the Conservative Party of Quebec (PCQ), Éric Duhaime, the day after the second and last leaders' debate, during which the two men had a dispute over the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the press scrum, the outgoing prime minister compared his opponent to Donald Trump by wanting to go back on his full-bodied exchange with him about the imposition of health measures in the last two years.
Mr. Duhaime, who has challenged them a lot, makes him think of someone in the south, Mr. Legault said after visiting an electoral office in Laval. The head of the CAQ was careful not to pronounce the name of the former American president. But revived by journalists, he replied: You know very well who I am talking about.
Using expressions similar to those used the day before, the outgoing Prime Minister qualified Mr. Duhaime as agitator and irresponsible.
“I don't understand how a people who are united can accept that a guy has been playing the role of agitator for two years. […] This is not the kind of leader we want in Quebec. »
— François Legault, leader of the CAQ and outgoing Prime Minister
According to him, the Conservative leader has disqualified himself from the post of Prime Minister, or even his position of party leader, by [taking advantage of] the distress of certain people to win votes.
Éric Duhaime denies being a Quebec Donald Trump. The comparison made earlier by François Legault is obviously flawed, according to him.
Questioned by the press after leaving a one-on-one meeting with the mayoress of Montreal, Valérie Plante, Mr. Duhaime deplored that the outgoing Prime Minister was trying to find himself a scapegoat to make his difficult debate forget.
“I think he didn't like his debate. Obviously, he was not very happy with his performance and he began to see that the Conservative Party was perhaps a more serious opponent than he had first estimated. It smacks of panic. I don't understand why all of a sudden I would be disqualified. »
— Éric Duhaime, leader of the Conservative Party of Quebec
Mr. Legault tries to demonize people who do not think like him, regrets the leader of the PCQ. It shows his lack of respect for his opponents, he adds.
In substance, Mr. Duhaime maintains that he is not an agitator, while emphasizing that he is normal to want to talk to your activists with a lot of energy.
I look at all the candidates, and when they are in front of their activists, it is sure that x27; we like that, ignite our troops, he explained, promising himself to do it again this evening in Lévis.
