Frédéric Abergel is tipped to take the helm of the CHUM
The University of Montreal Hospital Center is the main university hospital center in Quebec.
Frédéric Abergel is currently CEO of the CIUSSS du Nord-de-l'Île-de-Montréal.
The waltz of the CEOs of the health network does not seem to want to run out of steam in Quebec. Everything indicates that the government will proceed in the coming days with the appointment of Frédéric Abergel as CEO of the Center hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM). He is currently CEO of the CIUSSS du Nord-de-l'Île-de-Montréal.
According to two Radio-Canada sources, the board of directors of the CHUM informed the government of its choice, which must still receive the approval of the Council of Ministers.
Highly appreciated in the high authorities of the network and even by his subordinates, Frédéric Abergel will replace Fabrice Brunet, who did not wish to renew his mandate at the CHUM.
The CHUM employs 18,000 people.
Frédéric Abergel was CEO of the CIUSSS du Nord-de -l'Île-de-Montréal since 2018. His mandate was renewed in 2022 for four years. Previously, he held a director position at the former Montreal Health and Social Services Agency.
During his reappointment, the Minister of Health and Social Services, Christian Dubé, praised his remarkable leadership and great skills.
During the pandemic, he is probably the CEO who weathered the strongest storm, as neighborhoods north of Montreal were among the hardest hit by COVID-19.
In 2018, he replaced Pierre Gfeller who had left this position due to his appointment as CEO of the McGill University Health Centre. Yesterday the Council of Ministers approved the appointment of Dr Lucie Opatrny to replace Mr Gfeller. She was until now Assistant Deputy Minister of Health.
As revealed by Radio-Canada in April, the majority of CISSS and CIUSSS CEOs in office during the pandemic no longer hold office.
