This Thursday, January 30, Martine Vassal, the president of the Aix-Marseille-Provence metropolitan area, announced free public transport for residents under 10 and over 65. Cost of the measure: 10 million euros.
From September 1, 2025, residents of the Aix-Marseille-Provence metropolitan area aged under 10 years old and over 65 years old will be able to travel free of charge on the entire bus, coach, metro and tram network of the 92 municipalities of the metropolitan area.

Around 500,000 seniors and more than 220,000 children under 10 will be affected. They will have to travel with a free annual pass, according to information from France Bleu.

10 million euros invested by the metropolis
Free transport will cost the Aix-Marseille-Provence metropolis 10 million euros. Through this offer, the president, Martine Vassal, wants to improve the purchasing power of seniors, she announced during her New Year's greetings to the population this Thursday.
Free transport had already been introduced in Aubagne, a town that is part of the metropolitan area concerned. With nearly 50,000 inhabitants, Aubagne has offered completely free transport to all for nearly 16 years.
The Montpellier example
In Montpellier, residents also benefit from completely free transport since December 2023. This measure has been a real success. Public transport sees a 33% increase in ridership.
