According to experts, the ship sank after large blocks from the temple of Amon hit it. The temple was destroyed in a natural disaster sometime in the 2nd century BC

During a recent survey in the Gulf of Abu Kir, near the Egyptian city of Alexandria, scientists discovered a sunken ancient Greek ship, writes BGR.

The ship was full of treasures that date back to the Ptolemaic era – the dynasty of the rulers of Egypt in the 4th-1st centuries BC. e. According to experts, the ship sank after it was hit by large blocks from the temple of Amun. The temple was destroyed during a natural disaster sometime in the 2nd century BC

During the disaster, the wreckage of an ancient Greek ship was originally moored at the pier in the canal. The same blocks that sank the ship helped save it, the researchers say.

The divers responsible for the find claim that the blocks pressed the sunken ship to the bottom of the channel. This allowed it to fill up with clay and debris, eventually settling under 5m of solid clay.

Moreover, archaeologists have also been able to determine when the ship was built. Dating based on the construction of the hull showed that the ship belongs to the classical period.

It is worth noting that the sunken, lost ancient city of Heraklion (also Thonis, Fonida) is located in the Gulf of Abu Qir. When the ship sank, the Greek civilization still had great influence in Egypt – a time when the reign of the pharaohs was slowly coming to an end.

Finds of these types of galleys are extremely rare, especially during this period of time. So far, other ancient shipwrecks from this period include the Punic Marsala from around 235 BC. Until the discovery of an ancient Greek shipwreck, Hellenistic ships of this type and design were completely unknown to archaeologists.

It is worth noting what kind of construction the ship was answered not only by Greek shipbuilders. According to scientists, here you can see some signs of ancient Egyptian construction. They believe that shipbuilders created the ship in Egypt. Its length exceeds 25 m, and the sail is large.
