The Golden Globes were marked Sunday by the explosion “Oppenheimer”, the big winner of the ceremony, and the shelving of the “Barbie” doll, with also strong honors for the French film “Anatomy of a Fall”, rewarded with two trophies.
Christopher Nolan's biopic on the father of the atomic bomb received five awards and swept all the major categories: best drama film, best director, best actor for Cillian Murphy, who plays Robert Oppenheimer, and best supporting actor for Robert Downey Jr, who plays a politician, the scientist's great rival.
“A great story about the ethical dilemma of nuclear weapons. Does it have a chance of working ? No,” joked Mr. Downey Jr. “Unless Universal goes all-in on Christopher Nolan to direct Cillian Murphy.”
For his part, Christopher Nolan had a modest triumph.
“As filmmakers, we bring people together and try to get the best out of them,” explained the creator of “Inception” and “Interstellar,” paying tribute to his actors.
“Barbie,” another favorite of the evening, was, however, shunned by the jury. Voters preferred “Poor Creatures”, already honored with the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, for the title of best comedy.
In the same vein, it was Emma Stone and her role as a female Frankenstein in this fantasy film, who was elected best actress, rather than the interpreter of the peroxide doll, Margot Robbie.
Nominated nine times, Greta Gerwig's feminist satire, which sees Barbie discover real-world misogyny, had to settle for two secondary awards: the new Golden Globe for best commercial success – logically awarded after its overwhelming domination at the box office last year – and that of best song.
“Barbie” was also beaten for the prize for best screenplay by the French film “Anatomy of a Fall”, which doubled the bet by taking the title of best foreign-language film. Enough to confirm the universal appeal of the latest Palme d'Or at Cannes.
Moved, its director Justine Triet spoke of her surprise at seeing her feature film, which tells the story of the trial of a writer accused of murdering her husband and dissects the downfall of their much-loved relationship.
While writing with her partner Arthur Harari, “we kept telling ourselves that we were having a lot of fun, but that no one would go see this film,” she explained. According to her, the feature film “deals with truth and the impossibility of understanding it.”
This double success risks causing regrets in France, because “Anatomy of a Fall” will not be able to claim the Oscar for best international film. He was snubbed to represent France in favor of “The Passion of Dodin Bouffant,” a historical romance between two gastronomes.

Long considered a springboard to the Oscars, Hollywood's former favorite night has been plagued by corruption and racism scandals in recent years.
To get out of this bad patch, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which created the awards and focused accusations of ethical failings and amateurism, was dissolved. The new organization has greatly diversified the jury, inviting critics from all over the world.
Reforms maliciously welcomed by Robert Downey Jr., him again.
“To the journalists of the Golden Globes: thank you for changing the rules of your game, and therefore your name,” said the actor, rewarded for his supporting role in “Oppenheimer”.
Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese, Oprah Winfrey… The cream of the crop was there this year, far from the boycott of the ceremony in 2022.
After the actors and writers' strike that paralyzed it for six months, Hollywood seemed ready to turn the tide and eager to restart the promotional machine before the Oscars in March.
The only notable exception was comedian Ricky Gervais, who had hosted the ceremony in the past, who was absent despite his award for best stand-up comedy.
Among the other headliners, Lily Gladstone won the award for best actress in a drama film, for her role as a Native American woman confronted with capitalist greed and a series of murders in her tribe, in Scorsese's historical fresco “Killers of the Flower Moon”.
“This is a historic victory, it doesn't belong to me alone,” the Native American actress stressed.
On the television side, “Succession”, a chronicle of the power struggles within a family at the head of a media empire, dominated, with the prize for best drama series and awards for its actors Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook and Matthew Macfadyen.
The series “The Bear”, which delves into the back kitchen of a Chicago restaurant, dominated the comedy categories.
Finally, the American-Korean production “Acharnés” won the award for best mini-series.
