An international group of scientists presented a very unusual study in which they argue that gossip can not always harm relationships between people. Sometimes they can be useful, writes ScienceAlert.

Discussing someone behind their back is not a good way to exchange information between people. But according to a new study, if the information we share is based on truth, it can have a positive impact on our relationships with others.

Such conclusions were made by three scientists from the Netherlands, Hungary and China on the basis of a mathematical model of gossip.

In fact, a growing body of research is demonstrating some important social functions of gossip. For example, this can be a good way to gauge the reliability of another person. If someone shares false information about another person and those lies are found out, then the one who spreads the rumors may lose their credibility.

But scientists believe that if someone shares reliable information about another person, then this can increase the level of trust between people and will contribute to better interaction between them.

The scientists, Paul van Lange, Szabolcs Samado and Junhui Wu, used a mathematical model of gossip in the form of a triangle. At the base of the triangle in one corner is the gossiper himself, in the other – the one who listens to gossip, and at the top – the person who is talked about while he is not around. The simulation showed different scenarios for the development of events that were the result of the spread of rumors.

According to scientists, gossipers will tell the truth, albeit behind their backs, when information about another person is closely related to the gossiper himself and can affect his relationship with other people. But if the information does not in any way negatively affect the person spreading rumors, then these people most often tell lies.

According to the researchers, if the gossiper will have some benefit from passing on the wrong information, then he is more likely to take advantage of this chance if this ultimately leads to a stronger relationship with the person to whom this information is conveyed.

In any case, this is only a theory and it is based on the fact that the recipient of any truthful or false information will believe in what they are told. Scientists also believe that gossipers can make a decision to tell the truth or lie, depending on how this will affect their relationship with both the recipient of the gossip and the one being discussed.

At the same time, scientists believe that the gossiper will more often lie even about the actually good intentions and actions of the person being discussed, if this person is a rival in a career or in others , scientists summarize.

As for other unusual studies, Focus has already written that scientists believe they have found a way to outwit death so that you can live longer and better.
