In addition to providing data on physical activity, health and well-being, smartwatches also allow us to reduce the time we use our smartphones, by providing useful information directly on the wrist. For example, if you have a watch with Google Maps, you no longer need to consult the application on a smartphone to get directions. And thanks to an update that Google has just announced, its navigation application becomes even more useful on smartwatches using Wear OS (the watch version of Android).
Offline Google Maps on smartwatches
While it was already possible to use Google Maps on these watches, the functionality is now available even when the user is not connected to the internet. Google has just presented a series of new features for its ecosystem. And among them is the offline functionality of Google Maps on Wear OS watches. “When you download a map to your phone, you can access it directly from Google Maps on your watch, so you can easily navigate even if you leave your phone behind,”explains Google. As seen in the screenshot shared by Google, the Google Maps app for Wear OS will feature a new screen where downloaded maps will be available for offline viewing.
