Sound identity “remains to be confirmed”, indicated during a press conference the public prosecutor of Brive Florence Leroux-Ghristi, who specified that he had not made “any remarks with connotations religious”. This man stole a vehicle before parking it near the Saint-Martin Collegiate Church in the city centre. “Getting out of the car, armed with a knife and completely naked, he threatened several passers-by before to gain access to the interior of the Collegiate Church”, the magistrate said, confirming initial information from the daily newspaper La Montagne. A shopkeeper, Annick, who was nearby, specifies that the weapon is “butcher knife style, a very large knife”. “He was holding it provocatively and I saw him run towards the collegiate church. We are quite shocked”, according to France 3.
When the police arrived at the building, the man “was shouting, seemed to be self-mutilating by cutting himself with his knifeu”. They first tried, in vain, “to control him and calm him down by repeatedly using tasers”, but he then “advanced” threatening the police officers “by brandishing his knife in their direction”. “The officers then used their service weapons. The man died from his injuries”, added the prosecutor, specifying that an autopsy will be carried out on Friday to determine “precisely the circumstances and causes of death”.
Investigations opened
Two investigations have been opened, the first “on charges of vehicle theft and attempted homicide on persons in authority committed by the individual, now deceased”, the magistrate also indicated.
The second, entrusted to the IGPN, for “voluntary homicide by a person in authority”. It is likely to target between two and four police officers, according to the prosecutor.
