The son of a 64-year-old woman found dead on Thursday at her home in Landerneau (Finistère) with serious injuries to the head and face has been charged with murder of an ascendant and placed in pre-trial detention, the Brest prosecutor's office announced on Sunday.

The 36-year-old man was arrested on Friday in a hotel in Rennes and placed in police custody, the public prosecutor, Camille Miansoni, said in a press release.

The son admitted to causing the death of his mother, with whom he had been living for several months, by hitting her with a stone. “However, he did not describe any argument with the victim before committing the act. No motive for this act was explained”, added the prosecutor.

“A chaotic life story”

During his police custody, the man described “a chaotic life story, particularly on a psychological level”, according to Mr. Miansoni. The alert had been given to the police on Thursday by the victim's mother, worried about having no sign of life from her daughter “for several days”.

The police then went to her home and discovered her “lifeless body” as well as “traces of blood in the bedroom”, the prosecutor said. The victim had “serious traumatic injuries to the skull and face” , according to a medical examiner.

“The death appeared to date back several days without the possibility of determining the precise date” , according to the prosecutor. An autopsy is to be performed on Monday.

The son of the sixty-year-old, placed in pretrial detention, faces life imprisonment, the prosecutor recalls.
