Here's Why 2025 Will Be a Historic Year for Streaming

According to analysis by Ampere, 2025 will be the year that, for the first time, video streaming services will spend more on content than commercial broadcasters. The company predicts that global SVOD spending on content will increase by 6% to $95 billion. This increase in investments in streaming services would be driven by their growth in 2024, attributed to the end of free password sharing on many platforms, as well as the acquisition of rights for sporting events.

This year, streaming platforms funded by advertising or subscriptions are expected to have a 39% share of global content spending. Commercial broadcasters are expected to have a 37% share, while public broadcasters are expected to have an 8% share. Otherwise, Ampere says total content spending is expected to grow 0.4% this year to $248 billion.

A Change in Habits

As for the United States, Ampere says broadcasters are cutting back on spending after investing in coverage of the Olympics and the presidential election. “But beyond these one-off events, the decline in content spending reflects a broader trend over the past five years, as broadcasters face ongoing ad revenue challenges from declining linear viewership,”, Ampere said in a statement, noting that broadcasters are more resilient outside the U.S.

But in any case, Ampere said the continued growth in SVOD spending and the cautious approach by broadcasters highlights “the changing role of traditional television as viewer demand increasingly shifts to digital platforms and streaming.”
