What will happen if you fill your car with old gasoline.

How long can gasoline be stored in a canister

Deficits in the fuel market forced many drivers to buy gasoline with a reserve. But how long can you store gasoline in a canister? Will it lose its properties and how dangerous is driving on an “expired” one? fuel?

How long to store gasoline

Unsurprisingly, gasoline also has an expiration date. Of course, it will not turn sour like milk. But over time, it oxidizes, volatile fractions evaporate from it, and additives disintegrate and precipitate, informs Ukr.Media.

As a result, gasoline gradually degrades as a fuel. That is why GOST limits the storage period of any gasoline to 1 year from the date of manufacture. In addition, high temperature and contact with air shorten its shelf life even more.

At the same time, there are brands of gasoline designed for longer storage. For example, at State Reserve enterprises. Such fuel can be stored for up to 5 years, but it is unlikely to be found on sale.

What will happen if you fill the car with old gasoline?

First, the oxidation of gasoline leads to the formation of tarry substances. In the process of work, they are deposited on the parts of the car's fuel system. Secondly, with long-term storage, additives break down and the octane number decreases.

Therefore, a car filled with old gasoline may simply not start. True, you can try to start it on a small portion of fresh fuel. And only after warming up, switch to "expired".

But even if the engine starts, the problems will remain. A lower octane number can lead to 'finger knocking', more soot will form, and the fine channels of the fuel system can become clogged.

How to store gasoline

It should be noted that the storage terms stipulated by GOST apply to storage conditions in hermetic underground tanks. It will be difficult to maintain such conditions in garage conditions. But there are several recommendations that will allow you to extend the storage period of gasoline in a canister.

First of all, gasoline does not like heat very much. Therefore, the best place to store it will be a viewing hole in the garage or a cellar. Even in summer, it is relatively cool there and there is no sunlight.

In addition, gasoline must be stored in a sealed, opaque container. These can be standard metal or plastic canisters. True, in the latter, the fuel can accumulate a static charge and interact with plastic. However, it can be stored in a high-quality and airtight plastic canister for 3-6 months.

Metal canisters are ideal for storing gasoline. But here too there are a number of nuances. Keep in mind that over time, gasoline will eat the rubber gasket, and the container will no longer be airtight. So the gasket needs to be changed periodically. And one more thing: make sure the old can is not rusted from the inside. In this case, it is better not to use it: it will suddenly leak, and it may not end well with gasoline.

It is clear that it is better not to pour unusable gasoline into the gas tank. However, if absolutely necessary, it can be mixed with fresh fuel in a ratio of 1 to 3. If the situation is not critical, then it is better not to take risks and use such fuel only for technical purposes.
