Some people, in particular, those who have chronic diseases, need more than nine hours of sleep. And only a small category of people will need less than six hours to fully recover. This may be due to a genetic factor.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, an adult over the age of 26 needs 7 to 9 hours of rest. However, the duration of sleep can vary depending on a person's lifestyle and health. Features can be even in the same age group.

It is believed that women need to sleep 20 minutes more than men. The latter should take six to eight hours to rest, but on the condition that the sleep is sound and uninterrupted.

How to improve your sleep

A person's behavior during the day affects the quality of his sleep. Even small changes in some cases can fundamentally change the situation. Some useful habits will help to fix everything:

  • Follow the regime. It is desirable to go to bed and get up at the same time, even on weekends and vacations.
  • Create a calm atmosphere. A quiet and dark room, a comfortable temperature – all this will contribute to a good rest. In addition, there is no need to turn on bright lights and use gadgets before going to bed.
  • Adjust your diet. Six hours before bedtime, you should not drink coffee and alcohol, and you should not overeat at night. During the day, it is necessary to follow a healthy diet.
  • Don't drink. You can and should quench your thirst before going to bed. However, remember that excessive fluid consumption will cause sleep problems, because frequent trips to the toilet will definitely not allow you to rest.
  • Do not smoke. This is generally a very bad habit that should be abandoned. But if you still cannot completely give up nicotine, do not smoke at least before going to bed.
  • Use the bed only for sleeping. You don't need to eat, work and watch TV series here.

Do not go to bed if you do not feel sleepy. In any case, you won't be able to fall asleep, so you shouldn't try to fight the body.

How much sleep does a child need

Representatives the American National Sleep Association believes that the number of hours for rest depends on age:

  • From birth to 3 months, it will take about 16 hours. Despite the fact that babies do not know how to distinguish between day and night, from the first days of life they already observe cycles of 50 minutes of rest. Children often sleep restlessly, often wake up.
  • From 4 to 11 months, it takes about 14 hours. Sleep is already becoming more regular. Children still continue to wake up, but such periods occur less often.
  • From 1 to 2 years old – 12 hours. At this age, a couple of hours after dinner are usually set aside for sleep. It is important to develop habits – rest at a certain time, no gadgets before rest.
  • From 3 to 5 years old – 10 hours. At this age, children still need an afternoon nap. Night rest is characterized by deep sleep.
  • From 6 to 13 years old – 9 hours. At this age, after lunch, children practically do not sleep, only night rest.
  • From 14 to 17 years old – 8 hours. At this age, a good night's sleep is very important. Today's teenagers increasingly begin to experience problems with falling asleep, because they go to bed closer to midnight.

Despite the importance of this process, you should not sleep too much either. It is better to follow the norm so that the waking hours pass with benefit and pleasure.
