Scientists named the optimal duration of sleep for the elderly.
Seven hours is the ideal length of sleep for middle-aged and elderly people. Scientists from Cambridge University in England and Fudan University in China came to this conclusion. This amount of sleep supports the health of the brain and nervous system and helps preserve cognitive abilities even in old age, informs Ukr.Media.
Specialists studied the data of almost 500,000 people aged 38 to 73, registered in the British biobank. All participants were asked about their sleep patterns, mental health and well-being and were asked to pass several cognitive tests.
According to the results of the study, scientists found that seven hours without a break per day is the optimal amount of sleep to maintain cognitive functions, such as information processing speed, visual attention, memory and decision-making ability. While not getting enough or too much sleep is linked to impaired mental abilities and mental health problems.
"A good night's sleep is important at all stages of life , but especially in middle and old age. “Finding ways to improve the sleep of older people may be critical to maintaining their mental health and preventing cognitive decline and dementia,” said Barbara Sahakian, one of the study's authors.
