How to properly clean glasses to avoid scratches on the lenses

In order for the lenses to remain transparent, there were no spots or streaks on them, experts recommend cleaning the glasses every day. It is important to do it correctly: mistakes can lead to the appearance of scratches on the glass or they will become cloudy, which will negatively affect the dawn, informs Ukr.Media.

How to clean glasses at home

The algorithm is general for glasses with diopters, sunglasses or sports glasses. You can use a special lens cleaning agent, such as a spray or wipes. But at home, water and detergent, such as soap or dishwashing liquid, are enough. You will also need a clean, lint-free towel or microfiber cloth.

    1. Wash your hands.
    2. Rinse the glasses under running water from the tap. It should not be hot, so as not to damage the coating of the lenses.
    3. Apply a little detergent to your fingertips. Gently wipe both sides of the lenses and all parts of the frame. Be especially careful to clean the area where the edge of the lens meets the frame – this is where dust and sebum often accumulate.
    4. Rinse the frame and both sides of the lens thoroughly to remove all detergent residues.
    5. Gently shake the glasses to remove water droplets from the lenses and dry with a clean, lint-free towel or microfiber cloth. If you use a towel, it should be washed without fabric conditioner.

When water and soap are not available (for example, on the road), special wipes or an aerosol will help. When using disposable wipes to clean your glasses, it's important to inspect the glass first. To avoid scratching the lenses, blow off dust before wiping. If the glasses have an anti-reflective coating, make sure that the cleaner is suitable for such lenses.

    Don'ts when cleaning glasses

    • Don't rub the lenses on your clothes – it's so easy to scratch them.
    • Don't use saliva to wet the lenses.
    • Do not use household glass cleaners to clean your glasses either. They often contain ingredients that can damage the lens coating.
    • Do not use paper towels or tissues. They can scratch the lenses or leave hairs on them.
    • Do not try to sand away the scratch on the lenses with a tissue. It will only make the situation worse.
