"I started screaming": having contractions on the train, an SNCF controller and a passenger help a young woman give birth

This Sunday, January 12, 2025, a woman gave birth on a train in Isère. It was an SNCF controller who helped the young mother.

A birth like no other. Esther, a young woman from Grenoble and aged 22, was pregnant. Her due date was last December 30, but her baby was late in coming. This Sunday, while she was traveling to Valence, the mother had to give birth on the train at Saint-Marcellin station (Isère), reports Le Dauphiné Libéré.

In the middle of the wagons

Arriving on board the TER, she is seized with contractions. “There were other passengers on the train, I started screaming. They called the conductor. He was panicking, he told me, this is the first time this has happened to me.” arrives”, Esther tells our colleagues at France Bleu.

Supported by a doctor on the phone, the controller and a passenger, who happened to be a former firefighter, then helped the young woman to give birth on board the TER, at the bicycle area. “They did their best to reassure me, I shook the controller's hand a lot, it really affected me.”

A few minutes later, Alassane, weighing 3.4 kg, was born. The firefighters, who had been contacted around 8 a.m., arrived at Saint-Marcellin station, with the husband of 'Esther, and transported the young woman to the maternity ward of the Drôme Nord hospitals in Romans-sur-Isère.

Today, the mother and her child are going to marvel. Esther should remember this unusual birth for the rest of her life.
