“I was sorry”: Ambassador Melnik intends to apologize to Scholz for words about “offended sausage”

    According to the Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany, Volodymyr Zelenskyy was not surprised by his statements, however, he still had to explain himself to Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba. And he added that the expression was diplomatically inappropriate and offended many people not only in Germany.

    Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnyk said he wanted to apologize to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for the words about offended liver sausage, which were said in the context of his refusal to visit Ukraine earlier. He added that he regretted what he said. Melnik spoke about this in an interview with Spiegel.

    “This is a statement that I later, of course, regretted. I will personally apologize to him,” the diplomat said.

    He added, that the expression was diplomatically inappropriate and offended many people and not only in Germany.

    Andriy Melnyk also spoke about the reaction to this statement of the President of Ukraine. According to him, Vladimir Zelensky was not surprised by these statements, but he still had to explain himself to Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba.

    The Ukrainian diplomat said that he loves Germany, and can also stay in it forever after his tenure as ambassador .

    “Playing offended liverwurst does not sound very stately (a German expression that means pretending to be an offended person for no real reason – ed.). This is the most brutal war of annihilation since the Nazi attack on Ukraine, this is not a kindergarten,” he said then.

    On May 5, Zelensky and Steinmeier checked the telephone conversation, and the President of Ukraine invited the politician to visit Kyiv. In addition, the parties agreed to leave the past behind.

    On June 16, Olaf Scholz arrived in Ukraine along with French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi. Three European leaders held talks with Volodymyr Zelensky.
