During their recent archaeological dig in the UK, experts came across the remains of 240 adults and children at the site of a former department store that closed in 2013, which was located above a 600-year-old medieval monastery, writes the Daily Mail.

Experts have unearthed hundreds of skeletons in an ancient burial ground at the mysterious monastery of the Holy Savior in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, founded by the Dominican order of monks around 1256.

The bones were first discovered at the site a few months ago by construction workers laying the groundwork for a redevelopment project for a former department store that closed in 2013. However, experts have taken up excavations only now, as a result of which they discovered a medieval monastery, 600 years old. Reading rooms, stables and even a hospital were found in this complex.

About half of the remains found belong to children, which, according to experts, highlights their high mortality rate at that time. As for the rest, according to scientists, they were victims of the battle, as they had head injuries characteristic of arrows or musket bullets.

One of the theories of scientists is that this place is a mass grave after the raid on the city of the Welsh prince Owain Glynd┼Ár at the beginning of the 15th century.

During the excavation, tiles and other artifacts were also found, which are now stored in a nearby abandoned shop, where they are dried and cleaned.

It is believed that the monastery of the Dominican Order stood in Haverfordwest for about three centuries. The Dominicans, or Black Friars, had a different agenda than most monastic orders, as they walked among the population, preaching, praying, and teaching.
