China has identified a new dangerous strain of influenza virus. From the point of view of genetics it is a combination of avian, swine and human influenza. In the genotype there are traces of the strain that caused the swine flu epidemic in 2009. Potentially new strain could lead to another pandemic.
According to Science Magazine, the new strain was named G4 EA H1N1. It is found in the body of pigs, bred in China. For eight years (2011-2018), scientists have analyzed the subspecies of the virus and came to the conclusion that there is every reason to consider him “potentially pandemic”.
Among the 179 strains of viruses found in populations of Chinese pigs, G4 EA H1N1 stands out. First, from 2016, the strain is rampant and easily transmitted by airborne droplets. Existing vaccines against seasonal flu are not able to provide protection against the new strain.
While the danger of a new pandemic is purely speculative. There is no evidence that a new strain of the virus can be transmitted from animals to humans and from person to person. Nevertheless, scientists are encouraged to monitor this strain, and periodically monitor the health status of pig farms.
Earlier, US physician and scientist Michael Greger warned that humanity faces a new “apocalyptic” virus, more dangerous than the coronavirus.
