Since 2017, at each election, the Head of State has kissed a friend and activist of the presidential majority on the head on the way to the polling station. I subscribe for 1€ the 1st month
Sunday June 12, Emmanuel Macron was in Le Touquet (Pas-de-Calais) for the first round of the legislative elections. It is there, in this seaside town in the north of France, that the president and his wife, Brigitte, who have resided there since 2001 when they are not in Paris, have voted for many years. At each election, Emmanuel Macron respects a very particular ritual: on the way to the polling station, he kisses a bald man on the head… and has been since 2017.
This habit dates back to the first round of the presidential five years ago. A lucky kiss? Emmanuel Macron did the same in the legislative elections that followed, then in the 2019 European elections and again in April, during the last presidential election.
A superstitious president?
The president's passion for football is well known. He also supports Olympique de Marseille, himself having played football during his schooling. This gesture, he had to see it more than once in front of his television during the matches of the France team. Laurent Blanc had indeed taken to kissing the bald head of team goalkeeper Fabien Barthez, a symbol of luck for the 1998 World Cup, won at home by France. At the time, Emmanuel Macron was 21 years old, but he seems not to have forgotten the famous gesture.
Almost twenty-four years later, he reproduced it with Grégoire Campion, an activist from the presidential majority and longtime friend of Brigitte Macron. From 2017, this friend of the family was present at his side in Le Touquet. And on the way to the polling station, during the walkabout, Emmanuel Macron had kissed him on the head. Like his predecessor François Hollande, who took his lucky walk, Emmanuel Macron seems to be keen to respect this ritual at each ballot.
