In Pont-Saint-Esprit, two new collective composting areas were created at the end of 2024

À Pont-Saint-Esprit, l’aire des Tuillères a été mise en service fin novembre.

La gestion des biodéchets reste complexe. À l’échelle de l’Agglo du Gard rhodanien, 76 composteurs collectifs sont en service.

If there is one aspect on which we were not collectively ready, it is the sorting of biowaste, while it has been made mandatory from January 1, 2024, in accordance with European law and the anti-waste law of 2020, for all professionals and individuals. The territory of the Gard rhodanien agglomeration is now equipped with 76 collective composters. “41 of the 44 municipalities are equipped with at least one collective composting area, announced Laurent Nadal, vice-president of the Agglo, delegate for waste treatment and mayor of Cavillargues in a Midi Libre article, on December 22. The long-term objective is for each municipality to have a number of composters in line with the number of inhabitants.” About twenty will be installed this year. In Bagnols, the situation remains complex with only one collective composting area. The inhabitants of the city center regret it and are destitute. Furthermore, here and there, adjustments are taking place. For example, in Saint-Alexandre, the composting area in place for a year has just been moved 100 meters, at the bottom of the cemetery, “for healthier bases. Municipal agents manage it”, and overall, it's going well, says the deputy for urban planning Didier Massot.

Free bio buckets for apartment residents

In Pont-Saint-Esprit, Jérôme Carminati, deputy for cleanliness, agriculture and roads, first put back into operation this summer and closely monitored the city's only composting area, the one in the shared gardens opposite the Enfants du Rhône stadium. “It was full of other waste…” At the end of November, the Spiripontaine municipality set up a second area, in Tuillères. And a third, on Place Pitot. For maintenance and monitoring, Jérôme Carminati can count on the help of three volunteers. You have to go there every two or three days, and above all, you have to educate the residents, tirelessly. “They fill up properly. It works, it takes!”, testifies the elected official who has spared no effort on this issue. If he was afraid of finding waste other than biowaste in the composting bins, “today, there is very little, hence the importance of monitoring. We look, we sort by hand”. The elected official reminds his fellow citizens who live in apartments that they can collect a bio bucket (with lid) from CitéZen. It is free, because it is supported by the Agglo. Just as those who have a garden can benefit from an individual composter subsidized by the Agglo (administrators only pay €20).

The City of Pont collects the fruit of this compost for green spaces. The objective, announces Jérôme Carminati, will be to make it available to residents. As is already the case in Saint-Julien-de-Peyrolas, where two composting areas are managed by municipal agents. Back in Pont-Saint-Esprit, developments will be carried out to finalize the Pitot composting area which will soon be next to a dog site, the first in the city.
