A very non-standard 1981 VAZ-2101 was discovered in the UK. “Zhiguli” was seriously modified and turned into a sports car. A video was dedicated to the project on the Youtube channel The Late Brake Show.
Tuning VAZ-2101 performed in the Studio RetroFord. Workshop owner Dave managed to buy a Zhiguli for £500 ($600).
The condition of the car was appalling – it didn't drive, and the bottom, wheel arches and fenders were rusty. The car was invested $ 29,000, and work on it took 8 months.
The Zhiguli was restored , lowered and equipped with low-profile tires. The interior has modern leather seats and a sports steering wheel.
Under the hood, instead of the standard 1.2-liter engine, a 2.3-liter Ford Cosworth Duratec four with a capacity of 235 hp appeared. with., and borrowed a 6-speed manual transmission from the Mazda MX-5. For a light “penny” weighing 950 kg, this is enough to accelerate to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds and reach 240 km/h.
The Zhiguli tuning also includes a sports self-locking differential and a completely new suspension with modern springs and shock absorbers Bilstein. Modern brakes slow down cars.
