In 2022, the number of road accidents in Ukraine decreased by one third at once. The main reason for the improvement in the situation in the Patrol Police is the reduction in traffic during the war.
For 5 months of 2022, 5407 accidents were recorded in Ukraine. This is immediately 33.7% less than in the same period last year – then there were 8152 accidents. These statistics are given by the First Deputy Head of the Patrol Police Department Oleksiy Beloshitsky.
In total, 908 people died on the roads of Ukraine from January to May against 1001 a year earlier (-9.3%). The number of injured decreased by 31.8% – from 9887 to 6747.
In the Patrol Police, the decrease in the number of road accidents is associated with a decrease in traffic intensity during the war. At the same time, it is noted that serious accidents occurred due to the removed road signs and the appearance of artificial obstacles on the roads.
The main causes of road accidents in Ukraine in 2022 were named:
- Exceeding the safe and permitted speed of movement – 45% of accidents with deaths/injuries
- Violation of the rules of maneuvering – 20%
- Violation of the rules for crossing intersections
- Violations of the rules for passing pedestrians crossings
- Failure to maintain a safe distance
- Drunk driving
Aleksey Beloshitsky noted that in order to reduce accidents, 128 auto-fixation cameras have already resumed operation in 20 cities and 10 regions of Ukraine where there are no active hostilities. In addition, police patrols with TruCAM radars control the speed limit.
