Irina Shikhman on the closure of the Gogol Center:

Host of the YouTube show “What about talking?” Irina Shikhman commented on Instagram* the news about the closing of the Gogol Center Theater and published a big farewell post.

I often ask guests: what is there in Russia today, now, what are you especially proud of? Only without the merits of the XVIII, XIX, XX centuries. To myself, I answered this question like this: Moscow — the best city on earth. I've been to a lot of places. But our capital — the most beautiful and comfortable metropolis for life. We have the most convenient banking system. We have a competitive “Yandex”. We make the most popular cartoons in the world. And we have the Gogol Center. Known all over the world. The best theater I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot of them). So today, every day, everything that I was so proud of is taken away from me. On the fastest internet — the whole truth only now with VPN. Such a beautiful center of Moscow is decorated with paddy wagons. Favorite bank has become boorish and pulls money from customers. “Yandex” is trying to bend all the time. But yesterday, Kirill Serebrennikov announced that the Gogol Center was being closed. I will not describe how many emotions, thoughts and impressions this theater gave me. How I love the people who work there. How I loved to acquaint my Tomsk residents with this cultural miracle. The last thing my childhood friend Yulia said to me after the performance was: “Lord, I didn’t even know that the theater could be like this.” Four years ago we made films about the Gogol Center without Kirill Serebrennikov (at that time he was under house arrest). And I really want to say to all my heroes: you are the freest actors I know. I'm very proud to meet you. Thank you and see you somewhere else,

On June 29, the Moscow Department of Culture announced the dismissal of Alexei Agranovich, artistic director of the Gogol Center. On the same evening, its first artistic director, Kirill Serebrennikov, announced the closure of the theatre.

Many stars, including Svetlana Bondarchuk, Varvara Shmykova, Yang Ge, Aglaya Tarasova, did not stand aside and said goodbye to the Gogol Center on their social networks. At the same time, the Department of Culture insists that the theater is not closing, but only changing its management, and the troupe will continue to work.

Kirill Serebrennikov left the post of artistic director at the Gogol Center in February last year. In March 2022, after the conviction in the Seventh Studio case was cancelled, the director, who openly condemned the Russian military special operation in Ukraine, left Russia. A month ago, Serebrennikov presented his new film “Tchaikovsky's Wife” at the Cannes Film Festival.
