Is it possible to mix oils of different manufacturers and viscosities

According to one of the popular automotive “horror stories”, it is impossible to mix motor oils of different viscosities – allegedly, this has a detrimental effect on power unit. To what extent is this statement true, and what should be done if the engine urgently requires oiling, and there is no suitable oil at hand, informs Ukr.Media.

As you know, motor oil is a kind of cocktail made of a base (mineral, synthetic or semi-synthetic) and various additives that determine the operational characteristics of the oil. Car builders and oil manufacturers shout in one voice that mixing oils with different properties leads to engine failure. Yes, this is true, but only partially.

It is really not worth combining different types of oil in the engine, as there is a possibility of so-called foaming, sediment, overheating and other troubles. If your neighbor mixed different lubricants without any sad consequences, it is far from a fact that you also have this "focus" it will also be "painless" for the car No need to experiment – engine repair always costs a penny.

The consultant at the car dealership warned that in no case should you mix oils that are identical in their properties, but produced by different manufacturers? Do not pay attention: automakers have contracts with lubricant manufacturers interested in ensuring that the car owner remains a supporter of one brand. The worst thing that can actually happen is that liquids will react and lose their properties. That is why it is better not to delay their replacement.

As for mixing oils of different viscosities, this will not harm the power unit either. And especially when it comes to lubricants from the same manufacturer. "Cocktail" of two oils of different fluidity will have “average” properties.

In general, if you urgently need to add oil to the engine, and there is no similar viscosity of lubricant at hand, then feel free to take any other, and preferably from the same manufacturer. After all, the oil of the same product line usually does not differ in the composition of additives, which means that such a mixture can be safely driven until the next maintenance.

If it is not possible to purchase oil from the same manufacturer, then what can you do – take the grease of another. At the same time, do not allow high loads on the engine and try to replace this "cocktail" as soon as possible. on the oil recommended by the car manufacturer.

If it is still decided to use a mixed composition of motor fluid, then it is necessary to follow some rules:

  1. You should never mix synthetic and mineral products. These two liquids have different basic components, as well as different additives. The latter, which are in synthetic materials, simply may not dissolve in the mineral component.
  2. In no case should you make an oil top-up from another manufacturer, that is, if you need to mix semi-synthetic oil 5w30 and 5w40, they must be made one company. This measure is available only if the liquid must be topped up, but there is no other brand at hand.
  3. Before mixing, it is imperative to make sure that that both products have similar physical and economic indicators. If there is still no certainty that mixing will not affect the performance of the engine, then it is better to refrain from using several brands at the same time.
