People of Mature age who daily drink 1-2 servings of alcohol, better functioning of the brain and working memory than those who completely refused from alcohol. To such conclusion came from a team of scientists from USA and China. Reports BAGNET, the results of their research published in the journal of the American medical Association.
Scientists studied data on mental health status and cognitive functions of the brain nearly 20 thousand adult Americans (mean age 61.8 years) for the period from 1996 to 2008. Data were collected through regular testing participants on their ability to memorize words and texts, to navigate in space, checking vocabulary.
Comparison of test results of those participants who moderately consumed alcohol (up to 8 units of alcohol for women and 15 doses for men), and those who never drank alcohol, showed that they first better than the second. While drinking noted a lower rate of cognitive decline. Interestingly, the positive effect of alcohol was stronger in Caucasian than Negroid.
The authors of the study recognize that alcohol abuse is a major cause of ill health and mortality. However, the consumption of alcohol in small doses helps protect cognitive functions and verbal memory.
