The doctors of the Vatican paediatric hospital Bambino Gesù shared two years the sisters — Siamese twins from the Central African Republic, reports RIA “Novosti”.
Girls were born with fused skulls.
It is noted that this is the first case in Italy — and probably the only one in the world — a successful operation with full rear craniopagus (accretion of skulls), which is one of the rarest and most complex forms of merging in the bone and brain levels.
The doctors spent on the preparation and study of more than a year that was followed by three intervention. The last operation took place in June. It was attended by more than 30 doctors and nurses.
A month later, the girls are feeling fine but still under medical supervision.
The mother of the twins thanked the doctors and expressed hope that children baptized by the Pope Francis.
