It's the end for Spotify's Car Thing accessory

C&rsquo ;is the end for Spotify's Car Thing accessory

The accessory for Spotify's Car Thing car was not as successful as expected.

Spotify won't make history with Car Thing, its app-exclusive in-car music-playing gadget. The device, launched in April 2021, will cease to be manufactured, according to what we learn in the company's latest financial statements.

In an interview with the specialized site TechCrunch , a Spotify spokesperson said that based on several factors, including product demand and supply chain issues, [the company has] decided to halt production of Car Thing.

The failure of the accessory – a touchscreen with voice commands – is not surprising: the Car Thing only works with Spotify, and only if its users (Americans) have a premium subscription to the music service and a smart phone. You also had to pay a hundred dollars to get it.

You can guess that there is little room for this kind of gadget in a market where connected cars – which can perform these same functions – reign supreme.

Spotify is intended to provide reassurance to Car Thing owners that they will be able to continue using the device and its features.
