It was twenty years ago already… On January 28, 2005, Jacques Villeret died at the age of 53 following an internal hemorrhage related to a liver disease.The actor has thus left millions of fans in mourning, who still love watching these cult films, such as La soupe au choux, Papy fait de la résistance, Robert et Robert or even, Le dîner de cons, in which he gives the reply to Thierry Lhermitte.

&On the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of his death, France 3 broadcast the documentary Jacques Villeret, funnyly tragic, on Tuesday, January 28, 2025. During it, Jacques Weber agreed to testify. “The Sherwood was often the place where Jacques slept. I remember that we started by eating. Villeret's big joke was: 'For once we're going out without food', because we were among guys and we didn't stop!”, he remembered.

Émoved, it was with a smile on his lips that the actor recounted : “I won't tell you what state we were in at the end of the course… And most of the time, since we had class here at the conservatory, at 8:30-9am, Jacques was sleeping on the bench and this was accepted by Georges, the boss”, before adding: “We have energy to spare, we don't want to sleep… We want to disinhibit ourselves too. Tuesday, March 7, 2023, on the set of C à vous, on France 5, Jacques Weber had already mentioned his friendship with Jacques Villeret, whom he talks about in his book, We never tell people enough that we love them. “There's a chapter on Jacques who was a huge guy, he was one of the most gifted of all of us. He was monumental, he's the kind of guy who bats an eyebrow and the whole room roars with laughter, and after you just had to go, it was extraordinary”, he had assured.

Jacques Weber: “I heard some absolutely horrible”

Faced with Anne-Élisabeth Lemoine and her columnists, Jacques Weber had assured that Jacques Villeret had lived through a rather difficult period when he was at the conservatory. “He was mistreated by totally scandalous teachers, who, when he left the room, said to themselves 'he has no physique, we can't hear him, he's shy, he'll never do anything'. I heard absolutely horrible things, in our time you know, it's horrible”.

Despite the criticism, Jacques Villeret had a great career and won two Césars: that of the best supporting actor for his performance in the film Robert and Robert in 1979 and that of the best actor for his role as François Pignon in Le Dîner de cons in 1999.
