Handguns and war weapons stolen from a dealer

#NÎMES – Around fifty weapons, including handguns and others considered war weapons, were reportedly stolen during the night of 1 to 2 January in Marguerittes, near Nîmes. The weapons were stored in the premises of the Baumel company, which also specialises in animal nutrition and gardening and is located in an industrial area. The public prosecutor of Nîmes, Stéphane Bertrand, confirmed the theft. The prosecution has entrusted an investigation to the gendarmes of the Nîmes research section.

The January 1st baby born on the road, near Lodève

#HÉRAULT – This is the story that Lise and Romain, a young couple living in Lauroux, near Lodève, will not soon forget. Early in the morning on January 1st, the parents and their 4-year-old daughter, Jeanne, leave the small village to go to Montpellier. “We had to stop very quickly on the side of the road. We understood that we would not make it to the clinic and we gave birth to our son in the back seat of the car,” says Romain. “I then called 15 and waited for help.” The Smur and the Lodève firefighters quickly intervened and took care of little Gabin, 3.530 kg and 52 centimeters, who is doing great, as is his mother.

Access to Cagire Peak restricted after the tragedies

#HAUTE-GARONNE – Michelle Roux, mayor of Aguenos, in Haute-Garonne, has banned access until further notice to the hiking trails leading to the Cagire peak, where two people died on Wednesday, according to France 3. A few hours apart, on January 1, two hikers suffered a fatal fall. The first, a woman in her thirties, slipped nearly 300 m while she had set off at around 8:30 a.m. with two other hikers to admire the sunrise over the peak. The second tragedy took place early in the afternoon, in the same area, on the ridge between Cagire and Escalette. The hiker, aged around forty, slipped and also fell 300 m. On Thursday, the Saint-Gaudens public prosecutor's office requested autopsies in order to determine the exact causes of these two deaths, according to La Dépêche du Midi. “I am very sad. People do not realize that Cagire is dangerous. There have been several interventions this season. Some people go there to play tennis”, regretted Michelle Roux, quoted by France 3..

The English love the small town of Mende

#LOZÈRE – “It's always positive when the town is highlighted”, summarizes Régine Bourgade, the mayor of Mende, after reading the British daily newspaper The Telegraph. The prefecture was, in fact, ranked fourth among the ten most attractive small towns in France. The author of the article has lived in France for over twenty years and therefore describes Mende as a “valiant grey town” in full evolution, which has opened up and become brighter but has managed to preserve its heritage. Another town in Occitanie is present in the top 10, Figeac, in the Lot. Among the “not so pretty” cities, the daily “distinguishes” Decazeville, in Aveyron, Alès, in Gard and Narbonne-Plage, in Aude.

Today's figure: 1,300

#SAINT-JEAN-DU-GARD – This is the number of signatures collected at the end of December by the school's parents' group. As the start of the school year approaches, the group is still mobilized to keep all classes open. Two are threatened with closure at the start of the 2025-2026 school year and parents hope that the “qualitative criteria” will prevail over the “budgetary and accounting” aspects. A meeting is planned with the academic services on January 10.
