July 17 – Andriy Naliva : history, traditions and signs of the holiday

On July 17, people celebrate the Christian holiday of Andriy Naliva, in honor of the saints whose memory is commemorated on this day, informs Ukr.Media.

History of the holiday

Andrii Rublev, an outstanding icon painter, lived in the 14th-15th centuries. Very little is known about his life. He was the son of a craftsman. Consciously, he became a member of the monastic brotherhood at the Trinity-Sergius Monastery. He painted famous cathedrals, painted icons that had miraculous powers. The most famous of them is the Life-Starting Trinity. For this, the Orthodox Church canonized the icon painter.

In addition to Saint Andrew Rublev, the Orthodox honor the memory of another Saint Andrew – the saint and archbishop of Crete, who died on July 4, 740. If one became famous for painting icons, the second – for the creation of church chants.

The third saint , to whom a tribute is paid on this day – the great Russian prince Andriy Bogolyubsky. He came from the noble family of Volodymyr Monomakh, his father was Yuriy Dolgoruky. He lived in the 12th century, was a true Christian who built many temples and churches.

Until July 17, ears of winter crops were poured, so the people nicknamed the holiday Naliva. Its other name is Marfa, in honor of the mother of Reverend Simeon Stovnyk. The pious woman received God's mercy not only for her son, but also for her righteous life, faith in Christ.

Oats were the main attribute of the holiday. For the peasants, it is an irreplaceable culture, thanks to its healing properties. Jelly made from oats was used every day, during the morning meal, while it was still warm. Stomach diseases, anemia, diabetes were treated with it.

Oatmeal was necessarily cooked on Nalyva, generously seasoned with butter, lard with crackling, and fried onions. We did not forget about buns, cakes, oat flour bread. Before sitting at the table, the hosts treated the horses with oats. The husks were steamed, and the animals were allowed to inhale the steam so that they would not get sick all year round.

If two days earlier, on Berehynia, they didn't pick up the scythe, then they didn't leave it on the Nalyva field: they were cleaning winter crops, harvesting hay. But new business was not started – the day was considered dangerous. For this reason, the debt was not given or lent to anyone, they did not go on a journey until lunchtime.

The day was considered auspicious for conspiracies and sorcery. Various rites were performed: they called for rain, put protection against evil spirits for the house. The girls were fortune-telling for the bridegroom. In order to bewitch a guy and get married sooner, you had to eat jelly, lick the bowl and say the commanding words.
