Thanks to the Old Slavonic holidays, even today we can immerse ourselves in the atmosphere of life in Ancient Rus. Feel the culture, feel the life of our ancestors on your own experience, informs Ukr.Media.

One of these holidays is the Day of Aphinogenes. It is celebrated annually on July 29. At this time, the church honors the memory of the hieromartyr Aphinogenes, the bishop of Pidakhfoi and a dozen of his disciples.

Historical reference

Saint Aphinogenes, being a bishop, was the abbot of a monastery in the area of the Armenian city of Sevastia. When, according to the edict of the then-ruling Roman emperor Eugene, massive persecution of Christians began throughout the empire, it turned out that practically all the inhabitants of Sebastien are followers of the teachings of Christ.

The townspeople refused to give gifts to pagan gods, and destroyed their temple in front of the mayor. In revenge, the governor sent a dispatch to Rome, from where troops were urgently sent to subdue the rebels.

Bloody street battles began in the city and part of its inhabitants, escaping from massacre, decided to hide in a monastery under the management of Aphinogenes.

When, following the fugitives, the Roman legionnaires broke into the courtyard of the monastery, they were met by Aphinogenes himself and a dozen of his students. Under threats, the martyrs refused to hand over fugitive townspeople, for which they were immediately arrested and thrown into prison. The martyrs spent about 6 years under torture in the casemates until they were all beheaded in 311.

Folk traditions and rites

On Aphinogen Day, people try to go around the side of the forest. According to beliefs, at this time there is an evil force. It can lead a traveler into the most sleepy thicket, from where there is no way out.

If the need nevertheless forced one to travel near the forest, then it was necessary to do so in the strictest silence: the rider should not hurry and walk alongside the horse holding it under the bridle, and the one on foot should be silent and move silently.

Also on this day it is undesirable to fish – evil spirits could drag you under the water. It was also forbidden to sweep the yard with the house: people believed that the raised dust could lure an evil force into the house.

It was believed that on Aphinogenes it was necessary to visit the church or pray especially fervently, otherwise strong sinners had the risk of becoming obsessed.

At this time, the harvest began. According to tradition, the first sheaf in the field must be collected by the oldest woman in the family. He was called by name. Later, the sheaf was ceremoniously brought into the house and installed in the holy (red) corner. The grains from its spikes were considered medicinal, and all the stalks had to be fed to domestic livestock that were waiting for offspring.
