July 31 &mdash ; Omelyan's day: history, traditions and signs of the holiday

National holidays are direct guides to the culture of our ancestors. They make it possible to understand the worldview and belief system of pre-Christian Russia, informs Ukr.Media.

One of these holidays is Omelyan Day. It is celebrated annually on July 31. The church at this time honors the memory of the martyr Emilian Dorostolsky.

Historical reference

Emilian was a slave of a nobleman in the city of Dorostol in the province of Moesia (now the Balkans). In 363 AD e. a Roman envoy arrived in the province with an imperial order to exterminate all the followers of Christ.

Such a misanthropic decision greatly angered Omelyan. At night, he broke into a pagan temple and wreaked havoc there: he desecrated the altars, overthrew and smashed pagan idols. And in the morning he hid unnoticed by the city guard.

The local authorities could not ignore such a crime and blamed the event on an old beggar who sometimes begged for alms near the temple wall. After learning about this, Emilian returned to the scene of the pogrom and publicly confessed to everything. During the burning, a miracle happened: the tongues of flame did not burn Emilian's body, but spread over the pagans. When they burned, the fire suddenly went out, and Emilian himself lay down on the hot coals, prayed and departed to another world.

Folk traditions and rituals

The harvest was often completed on Omelyan Day. When the field work was done, the peasants laid out the working tools in a circle. After that, the local priest performed a prayer and consecrated the peasant equipment with holy water.

On Omelyan, girls often made fortune-telling about the defendant. To do this, they went to the forest and took turns shaking a spruce with cones until they fell to the ground. The bump closest to the girl shaking the trunk represented the future suitor: the bigger and more beautiful she was, the stronger the future marriage was considered. If it turned out "not that" the bump, the girl, after reading the conspiracies, could try again, but only at dusk and in complete solitude.

On this day, people necessarily visited the bathhouse. In order not to anger the bathhouse (the analogue of the house bathhouse), you had to enter the room with a bow and leave a little soap, a separate broom and a bucket of water untouched in the corner.

After washing, the oldest man in the family took the ears of the previous harvest and buried them deeply in the field, conjuring special conspiracies. In this way, the blessing of Mother Earth was ensured for the growth and ripening of the new crop.

On July 31, men were not allowed to fish, and women were not allowed to bake dough. Otherwise, they could get very sick.
