The best defenders in the regular series of Dominican winter baseball were selected as winners of the Golden Glove award in the Los Dominicanos Primero Cuqui Córdova awards, sponsored by Total Energies.
Outfielder Junior Lake, stands out among the winners for achieving his sixth award for defensive excellence. The selection of this line was in charge of the Original Jury and the 52nd edition of the awards is close. dedicated to David Ortiz, immortal of Cooperstown.
Catcher Webster Rivas was one of three Gigantes del Cibao players who won the Gold Glove. Also winning were first baseman Ramón Hernández (Licey), second baseman Gustavo Núñez (Estrellas), third baseman Orlando Calixte (Águilas) and fellow shortstop Ramón Torres.
Jose Sirí (Giants) and Sandro Fabian (Pick) joined Lake (Stars) as top defensive outfielders. Pedro Fernández (Giants) was the winner among pitchers.
Núñez won the second round. his third Gold Glove award and Calixte, Torres and Sirí; they added their second.
The Original Jury will also select their second. the Most Valuable Player of the semifinal series.
The event has been assumed by the TotalEnergies subsidiary in the Dominican Republic with the aim of highlighting the exploits of the criollo players of our baseball.
The award has been held for 52 years and was founded in 1970 by veteran sports writer Emilio Nicolás -Cuqui- Córdova, who died in March 2019, who until three seasons ago remained the main organizer of the event.
Córdova instituted the event. these awards under the title “Dominicans First,” with the purpose of recognizing the most outstanding native players during the Dominican professional baseball tournament.
