Cats have a personality and temperament that are almost indistinguishable from human ones. This is the conclusion reached by a team of scientists from the University of South Australia, according to The Washington Post.

After studying research by psychologists who named five human personality traits known as the “big five” (extroversion, agreeableness, openness, conscientiousness and neuroticism), university staff found very similar traits in animals. In this they were helped by 52 cat owners who rated their pets on on a scale of 1 to 7 for each of 52 behavioral characteristics and traits. After summarizing responses from 2,800 questionnaires from Australia and New Zealand, computer analysis identified five broad feline personality characteristics and gave the cats scores for each.

According to Philip Roetman, head of the university's “civil science” projects, including research on cats, three of the “feline five” are human traits, while the other two are very close.

The feline “Big Five” looks like this: :

  1. Shyness. It's like neuroticism in humans. Cats that score high on fearfulness tend to be more anxious and fearful. But calm and trusting cats had low scores. To make the life of such cats more comfortable, it is necessary to provide them with places to rest, where they can hide from outsiders: houses, tunnels, a place under the bed. No need to impose your affection and care on them.
  2. Openness. This is the equivalent of extraversion in humans. Very sociable cats are curious and active. On the one hand, this is very good, but on the other hand, if the cat has nothing to do, she can destroy the whole house in search of entertainment. Therefore, you should keep the animal busy as much as possible.
  3. Dominance: This trait belongs only to cats. Cats that are intimidating and aggressive towards their compatriots scored high. Such an animal does not tolerate competitors in the same living space and will spread rot in every possible way. In addition, they can enter into a fight with their masters, not tolerating one or another reaction to their own behavior.
  4. Spontaneity. Another characteristic feature of cats. High scores indicate impulsive, restless cats. You never know what to expect from them. The best way is to create a certain mode for the animal and not unnerve it for no reason.
  5. Friendliness: this is similar to the benevolence in people. Very friendly cats tend to be affectionate and sometimes very intrusive. They follow their owners and miss them if they are away for a long time.
