Killers of the Flower Moon: the script of Martin Scorsese's thriller rewritten because of Leonardo DiCaprio

As if Martin Scorsese's next film wasn't complicated enough to shoot, Leonardo DiCaprio had half of the script changed.

After the critical success of his The Irishman , a magnificent requiem bringing together the legends of his cinema, namely Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, on Netflix, everyone wants to tear up the next film by Martin Scorsese. And yet, Killers of the Flower Moon , in which the filmmaker will bring together the two leading actors of his filmography, namely Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro , almost 30 years after Secret injuries . And the task turns out to be very complex.

Indeed, with its pharaonic budget of more than 200 million dollars, the new Scorsese has frightened Paramount. The studio then sold the rights to the streaming platform Apple TV + to the nose and beard of Netflix. Add to that a new deal signed recently between Scorsese and the apple, in addition to the one with the actor of the Wolf of Wall Street , and Apple is on the way to become a serious competitor in the market of the streaming for the red N.

A melancholy Robert De Niro, in the magnificent testament that is The Irishman …

But beyond the financial and legal aspect, Killers of the Flower Moon also presents itself as a hell of a gamble, especially during a pandemic period, which has delayed its shooting, now scheduled for March 2021. An additional period of time where the screenwriter , Eric Roth (Oscar winner for Forrest Gump ) reworked the script… because of Leonardo DiCaprio, himself. Indeed, the actor would have asked him to make quite significant changes, confirmed by Eric Roth to Indiewire:

“Leonardo [DiCaprio] wanted some things to change, we discussed that. He won half of the [arguments]. I won the other half. “

Rumors, recently reported by The Hollywood Reporter, suggested that this reshuffle was at the origin of Paramount fears and what prompted the studio to sell it to Apple. In the original version, DiCaprio was to play the lead role, that of a federal FBI agent who traveled to Osage County, Oklahoma, to investigate a series of murders. But for his part, DiCaprio absolutely wanted to play the nephew of the serial killer played by Robert De Niro.

Family reunion … between two monstrous actors

A major change which would therefore have forced Eric Roth to change his point of view and to make numerous adaptations accordingly. It must be said that the eponymous book is told from the point of view of the FBI agent and that reworking the narrative through that of the nephew of the serial killer will necessarily require a lot of work in terms of dramatic and narrative issues. The writing would therefore still be in progress if we are to believe Indiewire.

Moreover, this change of point of view could also explain why Paramount dropped the project: selling a film with Leonardo DiCaprio as a villain rather than a good samaritan, it does not necessarily have the same weight at the box office, especially for such an ambitious budget. It remains to be seen what it will really be, since the two men were entitled to 50% of their desires.

Killers of the Flower Moon does not yet have an announced release date, in the meantime you can find out why we think Martin Scorsese's latest film The Irishman is a masterpiece, in our review available through here.
