It is estimated that he was born around the seventeenth century and the original did not contain tomato, but was based on fermented fish, vinegar and spices. In the province of Fujian, the place where it was created and, coincidentally, where most of the Chinese immigrants who arrived in Argentina in recent decades come from, his name sounded phonetically like “ke-chiap”.

With trade between Europe and China, ketchup became known in the West, But it was necessary to wait until the 19th century for the first tomato and sugar-based variety to appear. (some older versions even contained alcohol in their recipe).
