He made his mark on the sports scene throughout the summer and became the darling of the big pools: Léon Marchand made a real breakthrough at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The 22-year-old swimmer managed to win no fewer than five Olympic medals, including four gold. A performance that propelled him to the forefront and completely shook up his daily life. But this suddenly acquired notoriety also has its downsides, as Le Parisien recently revealed.
Our colleagues report that Léon Marchand's close friends say that “exhausted, done in and affected by a fed-up feeling with his entire environment”. An understandable reaction for the Toulouse player who finds himself assaulted by fans and the presswherever he goes. This is why the young man made a decision heavy with meaning to recharge his batteries and preserve himself.

As he recently announced, Léon Marchand is going to Australia for a while. He will thus be able to enjoy the summer who starts in the southern hemisphere to recharge. But he obviously doesn't lose the north. “I'm going to try to see another culture, to train with another coach. And then I'll join Bob Bowman in Austin in the year”. A plan intended to let him “breathe and see something else”for about two or three months. Fresh out of the Olympics, Léon Marchand is thinking about the next games without putting too much pressure on himself.
“I saw Bob Bowman and he told me it was good to see another way of training. It's the right time. I have four years to prepare for Los Angeles, so I have time. I'll be able to surf and enjoy Australia. It'll be a change a little” confides the young Olympic champion. A decision validated by Julien Issoulié, the National Technical Director of the French Swimming Federation.
“A cool recovery” for Léon Marchand
“The idea is above all to start the season in the sun, in a new setting. He arrives in a country where swimming is very important, where life is pleasant. At this time, it's summer, the structures are outdoors, the pace of life is calmer. It will be a cool recovery, in a very high-level environment” he explains to Le Parisien. Enough to allow Léon Marchand to get back into the swing of things gently and rediscover a certain intimacy.
