Living wage in Canmore is $32.75 an hour, the highest in the province
The living wage in Canmore is the highest in Alberta, but it is also higher than that of of Vancouver and Toronto.
Living in Canmore is expensive, but the salaries don't keep up. Indeed, the living wage is $32.75, while the average hourly rate for job postings in the Alberta municipality is $20.75.
The Alberta Living Wage Network, an organization that calculates the living wage for different municipalities, also lists this wage as the highest in the province.
There is also a difference of more than $10 with Calgary, which is $22.40, and Edmonton, which is $21.40.
As a result, many Canmore residents must have a second part-time job, in addition to their full-time job.
Sabina Litherland, who works at the Banff Arts during the week, has to work 15 hours a week as a waitress to make ends meet.

The Canmore Young Adult Network organization connects young adults in need to various resources that exist in the municipality, such as food donation centers. According to Activity Director Nicole Eplett, the rising cost of living and lack of affordable housing are preventing many young adults from planning for the future and settling down for the long haul.
It is not possible to stay in Canmore due to the cost of living in the Bow Valley, she says.
She adds that many locals go to Cochrane an hour's drive away, or Calgary over an hour's drive to get groceries as it's cheaper than Canmore, especially since soaring inflation.
< p class="e-p">For her part, Sabina Litherland, who is a complete vegan, does her grocery shopping online instead of driving. She says it allows her to save money and especially not to buy more than she needs.
Canmore Community Housing, which provides affordable housing, says rents have increased significantly between 2020 and 2022 in Canmore. The average monthly rent for a two-bedroom apartment rose from $2,010 to $2,735.
The organization's 118 affordable units are rented at 10% below list price, and there are nearly 89 people on its waiting list. Before the pandemic, there were 60 to 70 names on this one.
I think people are looking for ways to save money, says Theresa Newland, who works in the organization.
Buying a home in Canmore just seems out of reach. According to the Royal LePage real estate agency, the median price of a house is $1.5 million, while that of a condominium is $663,400.
