Cambodunum is the oldest historic city in Germany, showcasing Roman grandeur. Previously, this place was decorated with public temples and baths. However, archaeologists recently discovered a villa with underfloor heating during excavations here, writes Ancient Origins.

Cambodunum appeared in the 15th century BC. Then the Roman emperor Nero, together with his brother Tiberius, destroyed the Celtic settlement. Today, its remains lie under the city of Kempten in Bavaria. At the same time, during the Roman period, it was the main center of regional authorities.

During excavations in the Cambodunum Archaeological Park, a Roman villa with a “warm floor” was discovered. Archaeologists also discovered a thermal bath. The walls were decorated with all sorts of frescoes. There used to be many stone buildings of the La Tène period on this territory.

This villa is one of the oldest ever discovered in Germany. Scientists have found that the house was equipped with a unique floor heating system. In Roman times, it was known as the “hypocaust”. It is the forerunner of all modern heating systems. The so-called hippocausts produced warm water and hot air. This all passed through the pipes and allowed the heating to be heated.
