Police have launched a search for the main suspect in a shooting that injured five people near a highway in Kentucky, authorities in the southeastern state said Saturday.

The shooting also caused a car crash that injured others, according to London, Kentucky Mayor Randall Weddle, who did not specify how many people were injured or their conditions.

The gunman appeared to have aimed his shots, which were not random, he told the Louisville Courier Journal, with a local radio station saying the shooting was sparked “by a two-car altercation.”

The shooting occurred in Laurel County, about 90 miles (145 kilometers) south of Lexington, Kentucky.

The gunman opened fire from a wooded area off Interstate 75, a major north-south thoroughfare that runs through half of There were “several serious injuries” but no deaths have been confirmed, local news station WYMT reported, citing the Laurel County Sheriff's Office.

A 32-year-old man, Joseph Couch, is suspected of being the shooter. The sheriff's office said the suspect appeared to be “armed and dangerous” and the highway was closed in both directions to traffic.

Kentucky State Police spokesman Scottie Pennington told the Louisville Courier Journal that he had “no idea where [the suspect] is.”

The shooting comes after a 14-year-old boy killed four people, two students his age and two teachers, when he opened fire Wednesday at his high school in the southeastern U.S. city of Georgia.
