Things are not going well, she says, citing rising rents and the cost of groceries as well as new provincial law allowing hospitals to transfer seniors against their will to a center long-term care. This is not normal, she says.

The NDP, currently led by interim leader Peter Tabuns, is the second most powerful political party in the ;Provincial Legislative Assembly with 31 seats.

A native of Newfoundland and Labrador, Ms. Stiles served as federal NDP president and city councilor in Toronto before being elected MPP for New Democrats in Ontario in 2018.

After the NDP's crushing defeat in June, she said there was a lot of work to do to convince Ontarians that the party would make good government.< /p>

We need someone who can unite us and connect with ordinary people, besides being smart enough to come up with good policies, had- she says.

Other NDP leadership contenders include MPs Wayne Gates and Laura-Mae Lindo.

The candidates have until December 2 to come forward.

New Democrats will choose their new leader by ranked ballot. The name of the winner is to be announced March 2.
