In total, the exhibition “Ukraine from Trypillia to the present” presents about three hundred works of domestic painters and sculptors.

The metropolitan exposition “Ukraine from Trypillya to the present” in the House of Artists, which opened in December, showed a number of interesting works, where our creators show their vision of a new round of the Russian-Ukrainian war that took place after February 24. The exhibition presents about three hundred works of domestic painters and sculptors from different regions of our country. The sculpture of Anatoly Kushch, dedicated to the genocide of Mariupol, stands out against the general background. The cycle of different portraits of Grigory Skovoroda, dedicated to his 300th birthday, also attracts attention. As well as portraits of representatives of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, a symbolic embodiment of Ukrainian military prowess and the imagination of our creators on the theme of Kazimir Malevich.

The exhibition was constantly crowded with spectators, because this is the first exposition, where there are many works on the theme of the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Right at the entrance, Shevchuk's painting “The Sunflower Sower” is a kind of symbolic or even mythological warrior of Ukraine, who has a bulletproof vest, a falcon on his arm, and behind his back is a Javelin – an American portable anti-tank missile system. But at the same time, he is busy with a completely peaceful business – he sows cosmic sunflowers. The picture emphasizes that the Armed Forces of Ukraine are fulfilling their duty to protect the Motherland, but for the sake of peace.

Nearby are two portraits of the artist Kovtun, the red-bearded shooter Sergei Pozhivanov. He is greatness and an article – not a mythological warrior-sower, especially since he also has an RPG on his shoulder.

The canvas by Dpanevich-Potafeeva “Only cats go into battle” was made with a certain amount of humor “, where a real cat sits on the shoulder of a marine (“seal”). The military-patriotic film “Our cats” (2020) also came out on the theme of the Marines in Ukraine – also with elements of comedy.

The project of a monument called “Rashist genocide of Ukraine. Mariupol” by sculptor Anatoly Kushch, the author of sculptures on our Maidan Nezalezhnosti, aroused great interest among the public. To be honest, “Genocide” seemed more interesting to me than Maidan – this is a beautiful woman with a baby, who was surrounded by Russian machine guns with double-headed eagles and bayonet-knives, and a pool of blood spreads below.

Many paintings on the theme of painting by Kazimir Malevich. Anatoly Fedirko has long combined Suprematism and the Christian religion in his work. The exhibition features two of his installations – “The Mother of God” and “Jesus”, made in the Suprematist style. A curious canvas by the artist Zhivotovskaya on the theme of Kazimir is “Malevich's Cross”, where the master (as he portrayed himself) holds a cross in front of him, as if protecting with this gesture – the Ukrainian peasants standing behind him. Also depicted, of course, in Suprematist colors.

Many works at the exposition are dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the philosopher Grigory Skovoroda. One made him our contemporary – he is either a hipster (which would be closer to Skovoroda, given his free lifestyle) or an office worker – in a white shirt, with a fashionable tie (“Kharkov Tales. Eagle and Magpie”, Chueva O.).

And another work, on the contrary, emphasizes the scale of his figure and views. This is a portrait of Skovoroda “Catch the Elusive” by Oleg Shuplyak, where the translucent head of the philosopher is “penetrated” by space. Probably, the artist wanted to emphasize with this work the essence of Skovoroda's philosophical system: macrocosm (universe) – man (microcosm) – the symbolic world of the Bible.

I would like to end the review with something sweet and peaceful: this is Yatsenko's canvas “Fairytale Kyiv Winter”, 2022 – probably where a man with a dog looks at Podol from the Landscape Alley. Our winter was fabulous before the invasion of the Russian Federation. But the Armed Forces of Ukraine and all our people are making extraordinary efforts to return peaceful fabulousness to all our panoramas.
