Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, launched a frontal attack on Apple during his last appearance on Joe Rogan's podcast. The 39-year-old billionaire did not mince his words: according to him, Apple does not ;#8217;hasn't invented anything great in a while”. A scathing critique that reflects the growing tensions between the two tech giants.
“Steve Jobs invented the iPhone, and now they're just sitting on it 20 years later”, Zuckerberg says with barely concealed contempt. The Meta boss directly questions Apple's ability to innovate since the death of its legendary co-founder. An analysis that nevertheless ignores several major innovations from the Apple brand, such as the Apple Silicon processors that revolutionized MacBooks, the AirPods that dominate the wireless earphone market, or the Apple Watch that reigns supreme in the smartwatch sector.
The Vision Pro, Apple's latest in mixed reality, does not escape Zuckerberg's harsh criticism. With obvious disdain, the Meta boss dismisses the device with a wave of the hand, reducing it to a simple gadget “really good for watching movies”. This dig is not insignificant, Meta having invested billions in its own metaverse views the arrival of Apple on its playing field with a very bad eye. The battle to dominate the future of virtual reality has only just begun.

Zuckerberg denounces the 30% commission levied by Apple on all transactions made via the App Store. A “tax” that he considers arbitrary and stifling for the ecosystem. Meta's founder goes so far as to claim that his company could double its profits without Apple's restrictions.
The situation is all the more tense because iOS's anti-tracking features have dealt a major blow to Meta's advertising model. Zuckerberg accuses Apple of using privacy as an excuse to handicap its competitors. The difficulties encountered in integrating Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses with iPhones perfectly illustrates this technological cold war.
This muscular exit from Mark Zuckerberg is part of a broader context of personal and professional transformation. The CEO of Meta, who recently made a marked conservative turn, seems determined to establish himself as the new chief provocateur of Silicon Valley. Between the end of fact-checking on his platforms and the reduction of inclusion initiatives at Meta, Zuckerberg cultivates an image of rebel that contrasts radically with his former persona of shy geek.
Yet some observers point out the irony of the situation? While Zuckerberg castigates Apple's lack of innovation, Meta itself struggles to convince with its own new features. Threads appears to be a mere copy of Twitter, while the colossal investments in the metaverse are slow to bear fruit.
