Marvel: The Spider-Man spin-off on Madame Web postpones its release

Scheduled for July 2023, the release of the Spider-Man and Marvel spin-off on Madame Web has been delayed by Sony for a few months.

Hardly recovered from Morbius's disastrous flop (and Matt Smith's “sensual” dance), Sony continues with its Expanded Universe plans around Spider-Man, but still without Spider-Man. After the anti-heroes of Tom Hardy and Jared Leto, the Spider-Verse will welcome next January Kraven the Hunter, transformed for the occasion into an “animal friend” and Greenpeace activist, before seeing the arrival of Spider-Man's first ally: Madame Web. The cast will be carried by Dakota Johnson and completed by Isabela Merced, Adam Scott, Sidney Sweeney, Emma Roberts and Tahar Rahim.

The new Madame Web should therefore be quite different from that of the comics

Shooting for the film directed by S.J. Clarkson has just begun filming and last April unveiled a first release date scheduled for July 7, 2023 which was recently pushed back. As reported by Variety, Sony has made a slight adjustment to its schedule and decided to postpone Madame Web for a few months, thus moving to October 6, 2023. This date was otherwise reserved for an “unknown Sony and Marvel film”.

This mysterious film (which could nevertheless be the project piloted by Olivia Wilde) has however, has been moved to June 7, 2024, with the El Muerto film with Bad Bunny scheduled for January 12, 2024.

50 stars later

This news isn't exactly surprising or unexpected given that the previous release date would have put the film in competition with two other superhero heavyweights: DC's The Flash scheduled for June 23, 2023 in the US, just two weeks before the release date of Marvel's Madame Web and The Marvels set for July 26.

Postponing the movie also dodges other blockbusters like Indiana Jones 5 (June 30, 2023) or Mission: Impossible 7 – Dead Reckoning Part One (July 14, 2023), but also to stall Insidious: Chapter 5, the sequel to the horror saga which is not aimed at the same audience. This new slot from Madame Web also picks up the slot from the first two Venom, both released in October. Before that, Kraven the Hunter will land in French theaters on January 18th.
