Mass Effect Adapted into a Series on Prime Video: Good or Bad Idea ?

© Electronic Arts

Since 2021, a persistent rumor claims that Amazon is working on an adaptation of the Mass Effect video game saga into a series. According to information from Variety, the development of this production has officially launched for broadcast on Prime Video.

What we know about the Mass Effect series

The specialized media specifies that Daniel Casey will write and produce this project. The latter is not necessarily very well known, but he worked on the screenplay for the film Fast & Furious 9.

Alongside him, we will find Karim Zreik who will serve as executive producer under the banner of Cedar Tree Productions. His references are a little more solid, since he previously worked in the Marvel Television unit, now defunct. He notably worked on the series on Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and The Punisher.

No element of the plot has leaked and we will therefore have to be patient. Let us recall that Mass Effect follows the story of Commander Shepard, a human soldier from the 22nd century who tries to save humanity from a race of aliens, the Reapers.

A criticized project

There remains a major question: is it relevant to adapt this franchise into a series?? As the first rumors emerged, one of the former writers of the Bioware studio, David Gaider, had expressed his skepticism about the project.

He believed that the charm of this title rested on the freedom offered to gamers, an interest that will in fact be removed in the series. He added:

First, Mass Effect and Dragon Age have a customizable protagonist. Which means that the series will have to choose whether this protagonist is male or female. And boom, right from the start, you have just alienated a whole part of the community that had placed its expectations in the project. Second, these protagonists are designed to be a kind of blank slate, which the player fills in with their decisions. This won't work for a passive medium. Suddenly, the protagonist will have their own personality… and their own 'story'. It'll be weird.

As our colleagues at Journal du Geek recall, similar criticisms had been addressed to the series Fallout. Ultimately, Amazon Prime Video's creation was quite good, so much so that we should perhaps keep hope for this adaptation of Mass Effect.
