Truffle production in the region is “plunging”

#OCCITANIE The president of Truffes en Occitanie sounded the alarm on Sunday, January 26, during the truffle festival held in Béziers.

Antoine Yoris raised the “problem” facing the profession: “At the beginning of the 20th century, Hérault produced between 20 and 25 tonnes for a total production in France of 1,200 tonnes. In 2024, the total production in France will be around 15 tonnes! We are experiencing a huge decline, an abandonment of this culture, of this production. If we continue like this, production risks disappearing. Hence our work, that of all associations like ours, to ensure that this culture continues.”
Thus, the association decided “to take the bull by the horns” by establishing a partnership with the agricultural college of Pézenas.

The figure of the day: 25,000

#LITTORALA fire broke out on the Kriti Captain, an oil tanker with 25,000 tons of diesel on board while it was off the coast of Port-la-Nouvelle on Sunday, January 26 at around 4 a.m. The Liberian-flagged ship is 184 meters long. A team specializing in ship fires was dispatched to the scene. They notably transferred long-term respiratory equipment.

The fire was brought under control. There were no injuries among the crew of about twenty Filipino sailors or among the rescue workers. At around 7am, checks were underway according to the Aude prefecture “to detect any hot spots. At this stage, there is no risk of pollution. “ The fire is believed to have been accidental. The cargo ship, now damaged, is expected to reach the port of Marseille during the day.

The restoration of the Nîmes arenas continues

#NÎMES In November 2024, the Ministry of Culture approved the restoration of the cavea, the upper part located at the level of the crown of the arenas with stones. Currently, this part is mainly composed of metal steps, allowing rainwater to seep in.

“This is the second largest national construction site, after that of Notre-Dame-de-Paris”, rejoices Mary Bourgade, deputy mayor delegated to heritage. “The work should begin in 2027”, emphasizes the elected official, for a total duration of six years. The construction site will be split into two three-year periods with breaks during summer events.
As for what's next ? “We have restored more than half of the outer ring. And in two or three years, we will have finished all the spans. All that remains is to tackle the inner façade,” emphasizes architect Michel Goutal. A total budget of 54 million euros, to which will be added the cost of restoring the cavea.

A McDonald's restaurant in a small town

#GARD In Saint-Geniès-de-Malgoirès, a small town of 3,000 inhabitants, between Nîmes and Alès, a 400 m2 McDonald's restaurant is under construction. The inauguration is planned for the end of March with many guests.

The director of Mc Donald’s France will unveil on this occasion “a new concept” of restaurant. If this implantation in a rural area surprises, Mc Donald’s France explains that an opening “is always decided in relation to an economic potential”. The new restaurant is far from the RN106. “We are opening in slightly less natural configurations than in the past. Municipalities with 3,000 inhabitants are formats where the openings have worked well.”

Something new for the 100 km of Millau this year

#AVEYRON Saturday, September 27, 2025, the flagship event of the 100 km of Millau will undergo significant changes for safety reasons. The start of the races will be brought forward to 8 a.m. The time limit to complete the 100 km will be reduced from 24 hours to 18 hours, meaning the race will end at 2am on Sunday.

This decision aims to reduce the risks associated with night-time traffic and increased traffic on the Millau-Saint-Affrique axis and to facilitate volunteer management. A new 23 km event will be introduced this year to meet growing demand. The start of this race will be at the same time as the 100 km and the marathon.
