More than three million expensive Mercedes-Benz S-Class have been produced in half a century. The status model has pioneered the implementation of many modern technologies.
Mercedes-Benz S-Class celebrates its 50th anniversary. The first generation of the luxury sedan was presented in October 1972. The history of the model was told on the official website of the German brand.
It should be noted that Mercedes-Benz has been making expensive executive sedans for more than 100 years. However, it wasn't until 1972 that the Mercedes-Benz W116 received the S-Class designation, which is still in use today.
The letter “S” in the name has two meanings at once – Special or Super. The first generation of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class was produced until 1979 and equipped with gasoline and diesel engines ranging from 80 to 286 hp. s.
For half a century, six generations of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class have already seen the world and over 3 million expensive executive sedans have been assembled. The model has become a status, a kind of symbol of luxury and success. Particularly iconic is the 12-cylinder Mercedes S600 W140 from the 90s.
In addition, the flagship of Mercedes-Benz became a pioneer introduction of many modern technologies. Thus, the W116 model was one of the first in the world to receive ABS, an airbag and body zones deformed during an accident. Subsequent S-Class debuted the ESP stabilization system, adaptive cruise control, active air suspension, semi-autonomous driving system. Both powerful charged versions from AMG and economical hybrids appeared in the lineup.
